James McAvoy has landed a role in 'X-Men: First Class'.

The 'Atonement' actor will reportedly play Professor Charles Xavier - who was portrayed in 'X-Men: The Last Stand' by veteran star Patrick Stewart - in the forthcoming superhero movie prequel, which is currently being scripted by its director Matthew Vaughn and screenwriter Jane Goldman.

The film follows the early days of Xavier and his best friend Erik Lensherr - who goes on to become Magneto - as they discover their powers and work with a number of other mutants to stave off a deadly threat.

However, over time, the pair's friendship implodes and they become the arch-enemies depicted in the other movies.

No other casting information for the film has yet been announced.

'X-Men: First Class' is scheduled for release in June 2011.
