James McAvoy's friends thought he looked like a "prat" in one of his first big movie roles.

The Scottish actor is proud of his role as Mr. Tumnus the faun - a half man, half goat creature - in 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe', even if his pals didn't enjoy the family movie.

He said: "When one of my friends saw that he phoned me up at three in the morning - I was in another country - just to rip me about it. He was in fits of hysterics; he walked out of the cinema halfway through just to tell me I looked like a prat. Hey, I liked it but it wasn't really his genre."

The 'Last Station' star also spoke about his success, believing his desire not to follow in the footsteps of fellow Scotsman Ewan McGregor helped him land more acting roles.

He added: "When I left drama school there were hardly any actors under the age of 25 in Scotland. They thought, 'Look at Ewan McGregor. I'm off to London and Hollywood to make it too.'

"So there was a dearth of young leads in Scottish theatre, so a couple of mates and I cleaned up for a whole year and a half and it really set me on the path."
