James Franco has taken to YouTube to post a video message decrying the recent decision by the Australian Classification Board to ban the screening of the gay-themed I Want Your Love at Australian film festivals. This is just such a disappointment to me and seems really silly. I don't know why in this day and age something like this, a film that's using sex not for titillation but to talk about being human, is being banned, Franco says on the video. The actor had collaborated with Travis Mathews, the director of the banned film, on another gay-themed film, Interior. Leather. Bar. that was screened at last month's Sundance Film Festival. Asking the Australian board to reconsider its decision, Franco says in the video, I don't think we would be having this conversation if he had made a very violent film. Travis is making this film and including sex because he wants to explore story and character and the nuances that sex contains He called the board's decision embarrassing. But Deadline.com quoted Lesley O'Brien, director of the ACB, as saying that while films presented at film festivals are usually exempt from classification, I Want Your Love is a special case because if it had been submitted for classification, it would have received the equivalent of an NC-17 rating, blocking it from being screened at Australian festivals.
