Jean-Claude Van Damme is lining up a leading role in the 'Expendables' sequel.

The Belgian actor - popularly known as The Muscles from Brussels - turned down a role in the first film, directed by Sylvester Stallone, but is interested in starring in a second movie.

Van Damme's close friend, director Sheldon Lettich, confirmed the news on a fan forum, claiming he was on board but Steven Seagal is unlikely to return because of issues with producer Avi Lerner.

He wrote: "JC seems to be leaning towards appearing in the sequel, as far as I know.

"If Steven Seagal is not in the sequel, from what I've heard it won't be because of Sly but because of producer Avi Lerner, who had a few bad experiences with Steven."

Bruce Willis is among the other stars set to star in the sequel, confirming last weekend he would likely take on a bigger role in the second film.

Sylvester previously revealed he had asked both Van Damme and Seagal to take part in the project but was turned down.

He said: "I called Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal and they just had different ideas on their careers. But I did the best I could, you know?"

Van Damme is next set to appear in assassin movie 'Weapon'.
