'Jeff, Who Lives At Home' Is A Huge Hit With Critics

Esquire magazine have called new movie 'Jeff, Who Lives At Home' "symphonic" and it's scored an impressive 82 per cent on the Rotten Tomatoes review website. The stars of Jeff, Who Lives at Home, though, are keen to stress that this is not your average run-of-the-mill comedy. Ed Helms, who plays the older brother to slacker Jeff, says "It has a more complex goal than just getting laughs, and yet it was one of the most fun productions I've ever been on."
This complexity seems to have appealed to the critics, with Brian Miller for Village Voice describing the film, whose title character is played by The Muppets' Jason Segel, as a "surprisingly mutable, ultimately poignant day-in-the-life drama about a slacker who genuinely wants to stand tall." And Hollywood Reporter, who hosted the debut screening of the movie, praised Segel's performance as "the heart of the film, his naive faith making other characters' bolder gestures believable..." The variety in the film's humor also went down well with Charity Lemire of Associated Press, who noted "All of these comic actors find different sorts of laughs -- sadder, truer ones -- by toning down some of their usual tendencies. They're no less effective this way, but the shift does provide an unexpected tone."
In an interview about the movie, Susan Sarandon (who plays Jeff's mother) revealed that she was able to relate to Jeff's character, as she has her own sons "trying to find a philosophy that gets them off the track of feeling they have to be successful" and admits that she wouldn't mind "if they live in the basement, take a stupid job or smoke some weed while they're figuring it out."
