Tragic singer Jenni Rivera was celebrated by family, friends and fans during a special memorial service in her native Los Angeles on Wednesday (19Dec12).

The Latin star died in a plane crash in Mexico on 9 December (12), along with six other passengers, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

On Wednesday, thousands of devotees turned out to pay their last respects at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, where Rivera's red casket took centre stage.

The 45 year old's reverend brother, Pedro Rivera, Jr., led guests of the two-hour ceremony in prayer, and her five children each delivered touching remarks while images of their mother were displayed on a large screen behind them.

Her son Michael, 21, told the crowd, "We're not here to mourn the death. We're here to celebrate the life and graduation of a singer, an entertainer, a diva, a fighter, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and more than anything, a mother - the best mother."

Her youngest child, 11-year-old Johnny, held back tears as he added, "I've never seen a mother work so hard to accomplish anything, like getting groceries for her children to feed them. It's just a real honour to say that the Jenni Rivera that everyone is talking about is my mum. She still lives in me."

Mexican stars Joan Sebastian and Olga Tanon performed in Rivera's honour, while attendees included fellow singers Marco Antonio Solis and Ana Gabriel, and actors Lou Diamond Phillips and Kate del Castillo.

As the funeral came to a close, confetti rained down from the arena's ceiling, while a band played the last chords of Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive.
