Italian-American groups are up in arms over the decision of New Jersey's Economic Development Authority to award MTV a $420,000 tax credit to keep Jersey Shore in New Jersey. André DiMino, president of the group American ONE VOICE Coalition, told the New Jersey Star Ledger that the state has abrogated the public trust by awarding a tax credit to a show that not only stereotypes Italians, but promotes violence, and cast members who revel in openly breaking the law." The groups are backed by State Senator Joe Vitale, who told the New Jersey Star Ledger "It is disparaging to Italian-Americans. He should Veto [the tax credit]." But a spokesman for Gov. Chris Christie, while remarking that the governor regards the show as "a false portrayal of New Jersey and our shore communities," Nevertheless observed, "The Governor cannot veto EDA action that is in compliance with non-discretionary, existing law."
