Sandra Bullock's ex-husband Jesse James has had a narrow escape after crashing a truck during a race in Baja, Mexico.

The motorcycle enthusiast and West Coast Choppers owner - whose divorce from the Hollywood actress was finalised in August - crashed his off-road vehicle during the 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 race,

Luckily, neither he nor his navigator sustained any serious injuries.

Jesse, 41, crashed only 160 miles into the 1,061 mile-long race, although he eventually returned to compete after making a few repairs to the four wheeled buggy, at the course's 520 mile marker.

Only 201 entrants in the annual race, held last weekend, managed to finish the course, which takes in harsh Rocky terrain, as well as sand covered areas.

The racing mishap rounds off a bad month for Jesse after he was ordered by a judge to complete an evaluation alongside first wife, porn star Janine Lindemulder, as part of their bitter custody battle over their six-year-old daughter, Sunny James.

The process looks at the people involved and evaluates their lifestyle and relationships, which later inform the court's decisions in deciding custody, visitation, and parenting arrangements.

Jesse's current girlfriend, Tattoo artist and reality TV star Kat Von D, also suffered bad news after her house burned down last weekend.

She tweeted about the incident, writing: "My house burned down last night with my cat inside."
