Yes Man, the new film starring Jim Carrey, has hit the US number one spot after its opening weekend on release.

Based on the bestselling memoir by Danny Wallace, the Warner Bros picture sees Carrey as a frustrated bank worker who opts to change his life by saying "Yes" to every opportunity.

Earning $18.2 million (£12.2 million) in its first three days in US cinemas, Yes Man debuted at the top of the US box office charts, though its performance was hit hard by a severe storm in the northeast.

A Warner Bros spokesperson said the poor weather had knocked around $2.5 million (£1.7 million) off the potential box office takings for Yes Man in its opening weekend.

Ticket sales were also down for Seven Pounds, Will Smith's new drama, which debuted at number two with $16 million (£10.7 million).

The Sony film - which received lukewarm reviews from US critics - achieved Smith's worst opening weekend performance since Ali, in 2001.

Animated film The Tale of Despereaux debuted at number three, while Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire continued to climb the chart, rising from 11 to eight.

The top ten films at the US box office are:

1 Yes Man (-)
2 Seven Pounds (-)
3 The Tale of Despereaux (-)
4 The Day the Earth Stood Still (1)
5 Four Christmases (2)
6 Twilight (3)
7 Bolt (4)
8 Slumdog Millionaire ()
9 Australia (5)
10 Quantum of Solace (6)
