Jim Carrey has paid tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 45th anniversary of the civil rights leader's death, hailing him as the "bravest of the brave".

Luther King, Jr. was fatally shot on 4 April, 1968, as he stood on the balcony of a hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, and Carrey took to his Twitter.com page on Thursday (04Apr13) to mark the sad anniversary.

In a series of posts, he writes, "45 years ago today civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was taken by an assassin's bullet. He preached and lived non-violence. God bless Martin Luther King Jr. Bravest of the brave!"

James Earl Ray was convicted of killing Luther King, Jr. and sentenced to 99 years in prison. He died in 1998.
