Jon Stewart, the American satirist and political commentator accepted an invitation to appear on Bill O'Reilly's show and went head-to-head with the Fox News host yesterday (16th May 2011). Jon Stewart and the right-wing commentator debated Michelle Obama's decision to invite the rapper Common to the White House, reports E! Online.
O'Reilly had previously aired his concerns of the rapper's vocal support for two convicted 'cop killers', one of whom he allegedly visited after she had escaped from prison and fled to Cuba. The Fox host said Obama should never have allowed his wife Michelle Obama to invite Common to a White House event celebrating American poetry. On last night's show, Stewart suggested that the rapper was merely pointing out that the pair were wrongly convicted and was not promoting "cop killing". He also noted that artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Bono had written songs about men convicted of law-enforcement killings, saying, "Are you familiar with Leonard Pelletier? Guess who wrote a song about him? Bono. And guess where he was? The White House. Boo-yah! That's a rap word". As the debate raged on, Stewart joked, "Songs are not literal, you know that, right? When the Weather Girls sing, 'It's Raining Men,' it's not actually precipitating males", while O'Reilly teased, "Stop attacking the Weather Girls, they're one of my favourite groups".
Jon Stewart hosts his own Emmy Award winning news programme, 'The Daily Show', on Comedy Central. He was a strong advocate of Barack Obama's Presidential run in 2008.
