Actor Jonny Lee Miller will be among the fit celebrities hoping to bring smiles back to New York this weekend when he takes part in the annual city marathon on Sunday (04Nov12).

Big Apple Mayor Michael Bloomberg has declared the route of the 26.2-mile (42-kilometer) run safe following the storms which lashed the city on Monday (29Oct12).

At a news conference on Wednesday (31Oct12) Bloomberg said the race was "an important part" of the city's economy and he insisted that the 50 Americans who died as a result of former Hurricane Sandy would want the event to go on.

The Mayor said, "There are tens of thousands of people who come from around the world here to run. We've decided that the marathon will go on."

The marathon was expected to attract over 45,000 runners this year, including over 20,000 international participants.
