A New Jersey judge has delayed sentencing in Lauryn Hill's tax evasion case to give the singer time to pay back her debts.

Hill is accused of owing more than $1.6 million (£1 million) to U.S. tax authorities after pleading guilty to charges of failing to file her returns between 2005 and 2007.

She faces up to three years in prison but federal Judge Madeline Cox Arleo postponed sentencing on Monday (22Apr13) to give Hill two more weeks to pay restitution before the next hearing, scheduled for 6 May (13).

During the hearing on Monday, Judge Arleo scolded the reclusive Doo Wop (That Thing) hitmaker for failing to stick to a 2012 promise to settle her debts.

She told the star's lawyer Nathan Hochman, "This is not someone who stands before the court penniless. This is a criminal matter. Actions speak louder than words, and there has been no effort here to pay these taxes."

Hochman is seeking probation instead of prison time for Hill, who he claims has taken out a loan against two of her properties so she can resolve her debt troubles.

He told reporters after the hearing, "I fully expect that by May 3 Ms. Hill will be able to pay back all the restitution she has."
