Katy Perry is the latest high profile music star to have "performed live" whilst not actually being there - though unlike deceased rapper Tupac Shakur, her performance wasn't anywhere near as clever, and instead left the Idol studio audience looking forward to seeing it very disappointed. Confused? Well, Perry was announced as appearing on 'American Idol' during this week's elimination round, a huge coup and something that had been feverishly anticipated by both those with tickets to the show and TV audiences around the States.

As E! Online reported though, you sensed that things weren't quite as they seemed when the stage manager said in front of the live audience, "Should we tell them? Do you want to tell them? OK, let's just let it be a surprise." Sure enough, the surprise turned out to be somewhat under whelming - Perry wasn't there at all. She had been at some point, clearly, because there was a pre-recorded version of her singing new single 'Part Of Me,' dressed in military attire in front of a bevy similarly attired dancers. Yet it was merely a video performance that the audience had to watch and, unsurprisingly given the hype, they weren't happy, booing and jeering the performance.

Last night's 'Idol' saw ELISE TESTONE booted out of the competition, the 28 year-old finally exiting after spending several weeks in the bottom two.
