Katy Perry has pulled out of the People's Choice awards in the wake of her split from Russell Brand.

The 'Firework' singer has cancelled her planned appearance at the ceremony tomorrow night (11.01.12), which would have been her first public appearance since Russell filed for divorce on December 30, ending their 14-month union.

She wrote on twitter: "Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the People's Choice Awards. I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed! (sic)"

Katy, 27, is up for seven awards at the ceremony, including Favourite Female Artist.

After the couple announced the end of their marriage, Russell's invite to the show was withdrawn to avoid the possibility of an awkward meeting between them.

Meanwhile, Russell is getting over the split by going to watch his favourite soccer team West Ham United.

The 'Arthur' star is taking an extended holiday following the Christmas period and is spending his free time going to watch the east London club play as many games as possible.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Russell is looking forward to catching up with old friends and watching West Ham. He used to be a regular face at home games and also put in the miles attending away matches. He can't wait to get stuck in again."

However, being at the ground could bring back bittersweet memories for Russell, 36, as he could be reminded of the time Katy made 12 costume changes at the MTV European Music Awards in 2009, including wearing a bespoke burlesque West Ham lingerie set of basque and knickers, with the team's badge on each breast and his nickname 'Rusty' written across her butt.
