Kevin Costner - Kevin Costner Defeats Stephen Baldwin In Oil Spill Lawsuit
The jury has sided with Kevin Costner in his lawsuit against actor Stephen Baldwin over the BP oil spill. Baldwin has accused the Hollywood star of cheating him out of millions of dollars in a lucrative contract for oil-cleaning machines after the devastating spill in 2010.
According to the Associated Press, Baldwin and a friend were seeking $17 million in damages, claiming they could have made at least that much in the deal. A federal jury sided completely with Costner, handing the pair nothing. The 'Hatfields and MCCoys' star smiled and shook his attorney's hand as a grim-faced Baldwin left the court-room. His attorney James Cobb said, "We're disappointed. We thought we proved rather convincingly that these two guys, Mr. Costner and Mr. Smith, defrauded us.The jury saw it a different way but we respect the jury's verdict". Baldwin sold his shares in Ocean Therapy Solutions for $1.4 million, though claims he would have held out for far more if he had known oil giant BP had placed a $52 million order. Attorneys for Costner said Baldwin and his friend knew BP were well aware of the order when they walked away from the contract, rather than gamble for a more lucrative pay-out.
Costner had reportedly lost $20 million in an earlier effort to market the oil cleaning devices, though Cobb claims he made $15 million from the investments in the business following the oil spill.
