The Killers, Metallica and Rage Against the Machine have been announced as this year's headline acts for the Reading and Leeds festivals.

The three groups will stagger performances across the main stages at each venue during the dual-event festival.

In their only UK festival performance of the year, Rage Against the Machine will take to the stage at Reading on Friday August 22nd and at Leeds on the following day.

Metallica are scheduled to perform their Reading-leg of the festival on Sunday August 24th and Leeds on the previous Friday.

And the Killers, who were the first headline act to be announced, will play at Reading on the Saturday and Leeds on the Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend.

As the box office opened for both festivals at 18:45 BST on Monday, a host of other acts were also confirmed.

Joining the Killers on their performance schedule will be the Raconteurs, Editors, We Are Scientists, Dirty Pretty Things and the Subways.

On the same dates the Radio 1/NME stage will be graced by Manic Street Preachers, Bullet for my Valentine, Justice and Foals.

Tenacious D head the list of bands accompanying Metallica which also includes Slipknot, Feeder, Avenged Sevenfold and Dropkick Murphys.

The Cribs, Conor Oberst and Pendulum meanwhile are scheduled to perform on the Radio 1/NME stage.
