Only By The Night, the fourth album by Kings Of Leon, has been voted the best album of the year by inthenews.co.uk readers.

The Followills achieved their first-ever UK number one single this year with Sex on Fire while Only By The Night became one of the fastest-selling records of the year after its September release.

And having earned the four-piece critical acclaim and thousands more fans, the album has now topped a poll on inthenews.co.uk.

The blues-rock quartet held off the challenge of Elbow's Mercury prize-winning The Seldom Seen Kid to win the poll, as well as MGMT's Oracular Spectacular, (which was named album of the year by NME).

Metallica's ninth studio album Death Magnetic proved more popular with inthenews.co.uk users than rising stars Vampire Weekend and Glasvegas while Grammy nominees Coldplay could only manage seventh place with their fourth effort Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends.

The top ten albums of the year are:

1 Kings of Leon: Only By The Night
2 Elbow: The Seldom Seen Kid
3 MGMT: Oracular Spectacular
4 Metallica: Death Magnetic
5 Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Dig, Lazarus Dig!!!
6 Vampire Weekend: Vampire Weekend
7 Glasvegas: Glasvegas
8 Coldplay: Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends
9 Alphabeat: This is Alphabeat
10 Last Shadow Puppets: The Age of the Understatement

The best film of 2008, according to inthenews.co.uk users, will be unveiled on New Year's Day.
