KIRK DOUGLAS made a surprise appearance at the OSCARS last night (27th February 2011).
KIRK DOUGLAS, the veteran Hollywood actor, presented the 'Best Supporting Actress' prize at last night's ACADEMY AWARDS and the 94-year-old entertained the audience with a series of hilarious quips, reports the UK's Daily Telegraph.Douglas arrived on stage to rapturous applauds and immediately began joking with co-presenters ANNE HATHAWAY and JAMES FRANCO. Turning to the 28-year-old actress, Douglas said, "Wow! Where were you when I was making movies?" 94-year-old Kirk later referenced Franco's performance in '127 Hours', saying, "You look much better out of the cave" and also pretended to fight with an attendant for possession of his walking stick. Before delivering the winner's name, the actor left the five nominees on the edge of their seats by saying, "You know, I will never forget this moment". MELISSA LEO was the eventual winner of the prize for her performance in DAVID O RUSSELL's 'The Fighter' and speaking backstage the actress said, "He (Douglas) was doing us all this huge favour, because the longer he strung it out, the calmer I got to be".
KIRK DOUGLAS, the father of MICHAEL DOUGLAS, suffered a stroke in 1996 and had to learn to talk again with the aid of a speech therapist. He underwent a double knee replacement at the age of 88 and broke his foot in a fall two years ago.

He still "rocks" at 94. I was so enamored with him growing up that I would sit through his movies twice without even thinking about it. At that time, they didn't empty the theater after each show and you were allowed to sit through the same movie again if you chose to do so. When it came to a movie strarring Kirk Douglas, I always judged my time so that I could see it twice. I still watch the "oldies" on TV when they're on. God Bless him -- He was marvelous last night as always -- Just older!! Definitely a movie icon -- By the way, his son Michael "ain't shabby" either!

Are you kidding me? The man looked like he was doing a remake of Weekend at Bernies! Considering his body of work, and the gruelingly hard work he had to do to come back from a devastating stroke all came down to some feeble old man with a plasticized face who couldn't quite keep up the decorum. I don't understand why they had to parade him around as a presenter. So much for dignity.

I was moved and inspired by Mr. Douglas's appearance at the Oscars. He may look different after his stroke but so will we if we're lucky enough to live so long. Will we have such pluck and courage in the face of adversity as he has? And will our indominable spirit still charm millions of viewers? His body may have changed but his spirit hasn't. He still proves that a "lust for life" is more than just a role for him.

i thought it was the best most "real" part of the show. age, illlness, and -if we're lucky- recouperation are a part of life! Wjy shouldn't it be represented in all it's splender? We should never want to hide the elderly, developmentally/physically disabled, or sickly from our daily experience, We are all just living life the same way: fatefully and God willingly.
