Koch Dies On Day Koch Opens

In an eerie coincidence, Koch, a documentary about former New York Mayor Ed Koch, opened in two New York theaters on Friday just hours after his death at the age of 88. The film grossed $40,000 over the weekend (or $20,000 per theater), a solid figure for a documentary. Sadly, Koch did not review it for his website, The Mayor at the Movies, which he had neglected over the past year. (His last review was posted on Dec. 13, 2011 for the movie My Week with Marilyn, in which he started off by remarking, It got mixed reviews -- mostly negative -- but I thought it was a sheer delight.) Today's (Monday) Los Angeles Times noted that Koch himself appeared in more than 60 movies and TV shows, including The Muppets Take Manhattan, Sex and the City, Saturday Night Live and Spin City. He also served as a judge on The People's Court from 1997 to 1999.
