Electropop pair La Roux have finished in fifth place in the BBC's Sound of 2009 shortlist.

The prestigious list predicts the musicians likely to break through in the next 12 months and was won last year by Adele.

The longlist was unveiled in December and each entrant in the top five will be named on a daily basis this week, with Adele's successor revealed on Friday January 9th.

Comprised of Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid, La Roux create uplifting dance-pop songs, with influences ranging from Prince, the Knife, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Talk Talk.

This year's Sound of 2009 longlist also included arty duo the Big Pink, singer-songwriters Dan Black, Brit winner Florence and the Machine and Grammy-nominated hip-hop princess Lady GaGa.

V V Brown, Kid Cudi, Mumford & Sons and Frankmusik could also be named in the final five.

Other successful acts featured on last year's list included The Ting Tings, Duffy, Glasvegas and Vampire Weekend.
