The Lana Del Rey debate continues to rumble on in the Twitter universe and blogosphere - is she responsible for the worst Saturday Night Live performance of all time? Her rendition of 'Video Games' and 'Blue Jeans' over the weekend left numerous celebrities struggled to think of a worse musical guest.
The controversy started after Del Rey - a New Yorker likened to Nancy Sinatra - warbled her way through her two biggest hits. The live studio audience appeared to be baffled by Lana's first song, though host Daniel Radcliffe still attempted to drum up some support for her second. Slamming the performance on her Twitter page, singer Juliette Lewis said, "Wow watching this 'singer' on SNL is like watching a 12-year-old in their bedroom when they're pretending to sing and perform". Actress Eliza Dushku was generally just confused, saying, "Who.....is.....this wack-a-doodle chick performing on #SNL..? Whaaaa?". The most damning criticism came from Nbc anchor Brian Williams, who in an email to Gawker editor Nick Denton (which was later posted online), wrote, "Brooklyn hipster Lana Del Rey had one of the worst outings in SNL history last night - booked on the strength of her TWO SONG web EP, the least-experienced musical guest in the show's history, for starters". Though Del Rey appeared to be vocally 'off', the title of worst ever performance must surely be reserved for Ashlee Simpson, who famously messed up when lip-synching her track 'Pieces of Me' in 2004.
To be fair to Del Ray, she had spoken to MTV News last week about her troubles performing on television, saying, "I find it weird ... sometimes. [It] depends on the day.You know, like, [it] depends on what's going on with my family and everyone around me".
