Latin Stars Slam Arizona's New Immigration Law
Latin stars including Ricky Martin, Eva Longoria PARKER and George Lopez have voiced their fury over a new law in Arizona which aims to crackdown on illegal immigrants in the U.S.
The controversial legislation, which was signed on Friday (23Apr10), gives police officers in the state the right to stop and question members of the public they suspect are living in America illegally. It also requires legal immigrants to carry their registration documents at all times.
But the law has sparked fears it could lead to unfair racial profiling - and Puerto Rican pop star Martin was among the first celebrity to speak out.
In a post on his Twitter.com page, he writes, "Equality is understanding that we all come from the same place. Racial profiling should never be tolerated, in the U.S. or anywhere in the world. We're moving backwards. Scary."
Longoria Parker also turned her attention to the news, by re-posting Martin's comment on her own Twitter.com page, along with a statement from U.S. President Barack Obama, who has condemned the law.
Funnyman Lopez added to the comments, writing: "Arizona. George Lopez is coming... Oops... I just got pulled over... apparently I fit the profile... Gacho!!"
