Lenny Henry - Lenny Henry Lands Freedom Of U.k. Hometown
British funnyman Lenny Henry is set for a special honour in his native England after local officials agreed to award him the Freedom of his hometown.
The comedian was born and raised in Dudley, and now he has been chosen to receive the Freedom of the Borough honour by members of the council in recognition of his charity work.
Henry says, "Since my beginnings in show business in 1975, I have reserved a special place for Dudley in my heart; these... thoughts have helped me to endure through good times and bad.
"Dudley is a touchstone to me and I hope that comes across in my work. Thank you to everyone who voted for me and big love and respect to all my siblings and all my family and friends who still abide in Dudley."
Dudley Council leader David Sparks adds, "The council wanted to recognise Lenny's services to entertainment and also recognise his outstanding contribution to global fundraising.
"Lenny... is undoubtedly truly deserving of this honour. We now look forward to welcoming Lenny home later in the year to present him with his Freedom of the Borough scroll."
Henry co-founded Britain's Comic Relief charity and has presented several of the organisation's Tv fundraisers.
