LEONARDO DiCaprio is celebrating after the prime minister of Thailand vowed to change the nation's ivory trade laws.
The Titanic star teamed up with conservation organisation the World Wide Fund for Nature (Wwf) last month (Feb13) to launch a new animal rights campaign, called Hands Off My Parts, to highlight the number of rhinos, tigers and elephants that are being killed for their skin, bones, tusks and horns.
DiCaprio urged fans to add their names to a petition calling on Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to take action on illegal ivory trading in the country, and the politician has now announced plans to tighten the law on ivory possession, stating, "Unfortunately, many have used Thailand as a transit country for the illegal international ivory trade. We will work towards amending the national legislation with the goal of putting an end to ivory trade. This will help protect all forms of elephants including Thailand's wild and domestic elephants and those from Africa."
DiCaprio is thrilled with the news, writing in a post on his Twitter.com page, "Thx (thanks) to all 1.4 million of you that called on Thailand to end the ivory trade."
Revenge actress Emily VanCamp filmed a public service announcement (Psa) to back the campaign and she was also delighted with Shinawatra's announcement, declaring, "This makes me so happy. Thanks to everyone who signed the petition! You did a great thing."
