Leonardo DiCaprio will not be joined by Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic.

The 'Titanic' star has been confirmed to be taking on the role of the FBI director in the currently untitled epic movie about his eventful life, but director Clint Eastwood denied reports Joaquin - who claimed to have retired from acting last year to become a rapper, only to recently admit it was a hoax - would take on the role of his protege and lover Clyde Tolson.

Dismissing the speculation he said: "No. I don't know where that came from...didn't he become a rapper?"

The legendary actor-and-director admitted he is looking forward to tackling Hoover's "complicated" life onscreen.

He said: "He was a very complex person. The homosexual aspect is just one of many. I would say that's the least of his problems. But he was also very clever, whether rightfully or wrongfully, he was very clever about keeping himself in a certain position in life, so it is an interesting study."

J. Edgar Hoover became director of the Bureau of Investigation - which was the predecessor to the FBI - in 1924.

He was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, and remained as a director of the department until his death in 1972.
