Letterman And Kimmel Gang Up On Leno Again

Two late-night talk show hosts, CBS's David Letterman and ABC's Jimmy Kimmel, got together on Letterman's show Tuesday and lamented the fact that they no longer had NBC's Jay Leno to kick around anymore since Leno returned to the Tonight show. They then proceeded to kick him around again. "And I do want to thank you for your participation in the Jay Leno scandal," Letterman joked as he welcomed Kimmel, who impersonated Leno -- protruding chin and all -- on his own program during the NBC debacle. "It's fun to be Jay, it's easier," Kimmel quipped. "You should try it." He recalled that after doing his Leno spoof, Leno called him up the next day and complimented him. "I felt relieved that he thought that it was funny," Kimmel told Letterman, recalling that about an hour later he received a phone call from the show's bookers asking him to appear on Leno's show. "I went on and did the 10 at 10 [feature of the primetime show]. And he asked me ten questions about nothing and I asked him 10 questions about stealing Conan's job from him. And I did not get a call the next day." Letterman then interjected, "But what I loved about it was, it was fun, it was funny, and nobody got hurt. The only one that got hurt was NBC. They lost hundreds of millions of dollars -- but we don't care about NBC." Kimmel suggested that that was not the way Leno saw it, "because he went on the Oprah show and said I sucker-punched him. ... And I didn't feel that I did sucker punch him, but then I looked it up in the dictionary and it said I did." Letterman then repeated, "It was a lot of fun. I'm going to miss it, I really am." Since Leno's return to The Tonight Show he and Letterman have been running a tight ratings race. On Monday night only two-tenths of a rating point separated them among the key group of 18-49-year-old viewers, with Leno getting The Edge.
