A planned Live Aid-type concert to benefit survivors of the of the earthquake and tsunami disasters in Japan has been scrapped because so few big names signed up to perform.
The charity gig was set to take place in London later this month (Apr11), but promoters fear the lack of headliners will put fans off attending - and therefore it's no longer a good idea to stage the show.
A spokesman for Live Nation - the organisation behind the concert - tells Music Week, "Unfortunately, with now only 13 days to go to the proposed Concert For Japan, sadly we are in a position where we have been unable to secure the artists required to produce the worldwide TV broadcast that we had hoped for and have therefore very reluctantly decided to proceed no further."
However some music stars have been doing their part and reaching out to support the devastated country - Jack Johnson, Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani and Demi Lovato have all donated cash to aid the relief effort, while Liam Gallagher has masterminded a charity show at London's Brixton Academy, which will feature performances from his new band Beady Eye, Paul Weller and Primal Scream.
