Jerry Seinfeld is to be the first guest host to place Regis Philbin on 'Live With Regis and Kelly', according to ABC who announced the news on Tuesday (1st November 2011). The morning show will begin its next chapter, without Philbin, later this month.
The veteran host, who replaced Kathy Lee Gifford in 2001, announced his retirement from the talk show earlier this year. His last day will be 18th November 2011, with the show taking on the temporary title of 'Live With Kelly!' and featuring guest hosts until a permanent candidate is found. Announcing Jerry as the first personality to take over the role, executive producer Michael Gelman said, "Jerry is a great friend of ours, and a friend of Kelly's, and it doesn't hurt that he's an entertainment icon. It's a great way to kick off the new beginning of our show". Kelly Ripa and her new co-host will be joined by guests including Jason Segel, Kim Cattrall, Muppets star Miss Piggy and Howie Mandel.
Best known for playing a semi-fictional version of himself on multi-award winning sitcom Seinfeld, Jerry returned to the stage for a series of stand-up gigs in June 2011. After playing London's O2 Arena, The Guardian's culture critic Peter Bradshaw noted of his performance, "The gags are brilliant, the eye for detail superb".
