Veteran British soap actress Liz Dawn was convinced she was dying after contracting an incurable lung disease.
The star, who played Vera Duckworth in TV series Coronation Street, left the cast of the show in 2008 after 34 years in the role.
Dawn's character was killed off in the soap and the actress was convinced her life was also coming to an end.
She tells Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper, "My breathing was so bad I thought I was dying. I'd smoked for many years and I'd always had a bit of a cough and a splutter but I was getting worse and worse and struggling to breathe."
Dawn was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 2003 and was forced to use a wheelchair due to her poor health.
She says, "I had an inhaler and it wasn't making much of a difference. I was having panic attacks. When I went to (Buckingham) Palace to get my (award) Mbe in 2000 I had to go up a staircase. I couldn't get my breath. A gentleman tried to help me and I told him I had a bad leg as I was embarrassed."
