Baz Luhrmann is resurrecting his dancefloor hit Strictly Ballroom for the stage.
The acclaimed Australian director originally wrote the story as a play, which was performed in Sydney before it was transformed into a hit 1992 movie that launched Luhrmann's career in Hollywood.
He went on to make a number of successful films including Moulin Rouge! and Australia, but he's now returning to his theatre roots by bringing back his beloved Ballroom as a musical.
Luhrmann insists he is determined to be involved at every level as the show is revamped for a new generation.
He says, "A cynical version would have been to find some bright spark and say, 'Why don't you go off and do a jukebox version and I turn up on opening night and go 'Isn't it lovely?'...
"One has to be both honest and true to what the movie was, but also daring with the execution on stage... (one has to) aggressively address the question of the theatrical invention one has to go through to make the piece alive, edgy and forward-moving."
And the director is already convinced the show will be popular with theatre-goers, adding, "I don't want to make a show for luvvies! It's going to be a live stage musical for everyone."
