Macy Gray - Macy Gray Threatens To Boycott Israeli Gigs
Macy Gray, the GRAMMY AWARD winning soul singer, has threatened to cancel her forthcoming shows in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv because of the country's on-going conflict with neighbouring Palestine, reports Reuters. In recent years, musicians and entertainers have come under increasing pressure to boycott concerts in Israel and last summer Elvis Costello pulled out of playing a planned show because of what he called the 'grave and complex' sensitivities.
Before making a decision on whether to boycott the Tel Aviv gigs, Grey has taken to her Facebook page in an attempt to gauge the thoughts of her fans. In a message posted on Monday (17th January 2011), the singer wrote, "I'm getting alot of letters from activists urging/begging me to boycott by NOT performing in protest of Apartheid against the Palestinians", before adding, "What the Israeli government is doing to the Palestinians is disgusting, but I wana go. I gotta lotta fans there I dont want to cancel on and I dont know how my NOT going changes anything. What do you think? Stay or go?". (sic)
Palestinians accuse Israel of operating an apartheid system in the occupied West Bank, where they want to form an independent state. The Israelis accuse Palestine of seeking to destroy the Jewish state and both sides have been locked in battle for over six decades. Earlier this month, Johnny Depp's wife Vanessa Paradis cancelled a concert in Israel, claiming that the show clashed with an important meeting.
