Lionsgate comedy Madea Goes to Jail has opened at the top of the US box office charts, giving the studio its biggest-ever weekend opening.
The film took $41.1 million (£28.2 million) in its three days on release, also marking star/writer/director Tyler Perry's record opening.
Madea, an overbearing African-American middle-aged woman, is Perry's best known character and has featured in his previous six films which, included the new success of Madea Goes to Jail, have grossed some $300 million (£206 million) at the US box office for Lionsgate.
Taken and Coraline both climbed one place in the US top five with romantic comedy He's Just Not That Into You falling two places to fourth.
Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire, which won eight Academy awards including best picture on Sunday night, remained in the US top ten for its ninth week, climbing four places to fifth.
