Madonna was this week announced as the star of next year's Super Bowl half-time show, which - as CBS News pointed out -cements the idea that pop is fully back in fashion with the Nfl following The Black-eyed Peas storming 15 minute set last year. Before then you had to go back to 2004 to find another pop artist providing the changeover entertainment, and it was more entertaining than some might've imagined as Janet Jackson suffered her infamous wardrobe malfunction at the hands of Justin Timberlake. Maybe that had something to do with the fact that between 2005 and 2010 the Nfl concentrated on a rock-centric list of guests from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers to Bruce Springsteen.
The return to pop - and the appearance of one of the genre's biggest ever stars - hasn't gone down well in all households however, with The Indy Channel spotting several Indianapolis locals - where the event will be held on February 5th next year - taking to network channel Rtv6's Facebook page to express their dismay at the hiring of one of the biggest icons of the past 30 years. "The first Super Bowl we get to host . they pick her?" One outraged fan posted, "They should have gotten someone from Indiana." Another commented "I will be finding other things to do during the halftime show. Leave it to the Nfl to screw up a good thing."
Despite these protestations, it's hard to imagine that too many people inside the stadium will be complaining, not least with the Cirque De Soleil also on hand to provide the visual aesthetic
