Pop superstar Madonna has vowed to continue efforts to tackle the "education crisis" in Malawi after her plans to build a girls' school in the country collapsed.
The Material Girl gave $11 million (£6.9 million) to help construct the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, but the project has been thrown into doubt amid allegations of financial mismanagement at the foundation.
The Raising Malawi board of directors has now been dismissed and replaced with a caretaker panel, which includes the singer and her manager, according to the New York Times.
In an email, Raising Malawi co-founder Michael Berg writes, "A thoughtful decision has been made to discontinue plans for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, as it was originally conceived."
But despite the setback, Madonna is determined to continue her campaign for better schooling for girls in Malawi.
In a statement, she says, "There's a real education crisis in Malawi. Sixty-seven per cent of girls don't go to secondary school, and this is simply unacceptable. Our team is going to work hard to address this in every way we can."
The singer has poured millions into Malawi through the charity in recent years and her two youngest children, David and Mercy, were adopted from the nation.
