Mark Ruffalo, the 43-year-old American actor, says he was "pleasantly surprised" to hear his name amongst the list of nominees for 'Best Supporting Actor' at next month's Academy Awards. Ruffalo received the nod for his role in the indie-comedy flick 'The Kids Are All Right', in which he plays a bachelor who becomes a sperm-donor for a lesbian couple.
It is Ruffalo's first ever OSCAR nomination and speaking earlier today to the Wall Street Journal the actor said "I'm pleasantly surprised that I was included in the list. My work tends to be a little more low-key. I don't see myself as an Oscar contender generally because of that. I'm completely blown away and so grateful that I am being considered and people have taken notice of it". The film, written and directed by Lisa Cholodenko, also picked up nominations in the categories of 'Best Actress' for Annette Bening, 'Best Screenplay' and 'Best Picture'. After being asked how he gets through the awards season each year, Ruffalo said, "One thing I know is I've been doing this for 20 years and it's taken me 20 to get here. In another 20, I may be dead. I've been really trying to enjoy it and soak it up and really be grateful for it".
Ruffalo will battle it out with the likes of Geoffrey Rush, John Hawkes and Jeremy Renner for the 'Best Supporting Actor' prize, however, Christian Bale is the favourite to scoop the honour for his performance in 'The Fighter'.
