Martin Freeman is nervous people will ''hate'' 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'.

The 41-year-old actor plays hobbit Bilbo Baggins in the movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's successful fantasy novel and although he has landed such a sought after role after being chosen personally by director Sir Peter Jackson, he worries about the reaction from fans and how his life will change after its release.

He revealed said: ''Until it actually happens it's all an intellectual exercise. What if everyone hates it? I try not to count my chickens but yes, it's clearly a bigger film than I've ever made.

''People are so enthusiastic about this story that if I thought about them hating it or hating my rendition of it I wouldn't be able to go to work.''

Martin - who has children Joe, seven, and Grace, three, with wife Amanda Abbington - also finds it ''weird'' to see himself as Bilbo on huge posters as he is not use to starring in such a huge film but is relieved a ''good'' photograph was chosen to promote the film.

He added: ''It's kind of weird when everywhere you go there are pictures of you. It's certainly unusual for any film I've ever done. But it's a good picture of me and at least I'm happy with it, because if it was a picture I hated I wouldn't go out.''
