Martin Sheen says his son Charlie's 'addiction' is "a form of cancer".
Martin Sheen, the American actor and father of troubled star Charlie Sheen, says his son's addiction is a form of cancer, reports Sky News. The 'West Wing' star admits it has been painful to watch the 45-year-old become embroiled in a media frenzy over the past few weeks but says he is prepared to support him through his 'addiction'. Charlie is currently receiving rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse at his Los Angeles home after being hospitalised earlier this year. 70-year-old Martin said, "He's an extraordinary man and he's doing well. We pray for him. If he had cancer how would you treat him. This disease of addiction is a form of cancer. You have to have an equal measure of concern and love". The actor says he and his wife Janet Templeton are willing to help their son in his attempt to get clean, adding, "You realise we're not all on the same journey all the time. We have to love that much more. We have to be that much more present".
Martin Sheen is currently in the UK promoting his new movie 'The Way', which also stars Emilio Estevez and James Nesbitt. It was announced this week that Charlie had broken the Guinness World Record after gaining over one-million Twitter followers in less than 24 hours.

What a disgrace to Cancer victims to make this statement. Drinking and Drugs are choices you make in life, Cancer is NOT. I used to be a fan of Martin Sheen, but not after this comment. He's a Spoiled rotten celebrity who wants to party like he's 20. Perhaps if the Public quit caring about his B.S. the ranting would end. He's sick all right, from having everything handed to him.

Theres a big difference its called CHOICE!! Charlie made the choice to pick up a bottle & do drugs. People dont choose to have cancer dad. I understand you love your son. You should support, but not make excuses or enable this behavior.

Charlie Sheen is an addict and lunatic. He does not have cancer and is not fighting to live like so many cancer patients have to do. He also does not have 1 million followers - he has 1 million people waiting to see what the next outrageous/crazy comments he will have. Followers are people that respect and admire a person - this is not the case quite the opposite.

Amen to you, Annie222. I detest Martin Sheen and have ever since he referred to George Bush as a "white knuckled drunk" who has failed to face his drinking problems. This after it was proven George Bush had not had a drink since his college years. Now that his son has made a complete ass of himself, Martin is playing the sympathy card and having the audacity to compare this situation to Cancer. Nice he could criticize the President severely, but pat his son (and himself) on the head.

Why is the word addictionin quotes? With the numerous rants and crazy thoughts he has had, it is clear he is 'NOT DOING WELL'. After all hisdrug is called Charlie Sheen! Very sad that dad is in denial. Sure supporthim, but kick his butt and tell him, 'You can rehab at home'. They have said it is due to privacy issues....Charlie the world knows because you have talked and talked and talked about it. You cannot rehab at home. If he hadcancer he would be getting appropriate care. I totally agree with @Annie222!!

Martin Sheen has faced his own demons and knows what to say publicly and privately to Charlie...as for his George Bush comments..."everyone knows he was an alcoholic and him and his wife prozac users"....it is well documented and Bush himself has spoken about it so get your head out of the sand.

Very well said Annie222, Oswego, LS and Donna777. Both father and son continue to live in fantasy land. I for one can't stand either one of them especially after Charlie saying that Pres. Bush was behind the 9/11 attacks...to me that speaks volumes about idiots like them anyway.

Martin is correct. Charlie is VERY sick. Let that sickness be an example to those considering illegal drug and alcohol use. Life becomes unmanageable, behavior unpredictable and blaming rampant on everything but the real problem. Thank God he is getting treatment. Who cares where. However, in the end, it is up to Charlie to have the willingness (not willpower) to overcome his dependencies and bondage to drugs and/or alcohol...they chemically alter our state of mind. The tools are out there if he WANTS help. That comes from within.

Oswego - George W Bush drank until he was 40 - his wife said that he had to stop or the marriage was over, so he quit. He didn't stop drinking right after college! Secondly, someone doesn't have to be actively using alcohol to be a "drunk". It's a behavior - ever heard of a "dry drunk"? GWB behaved like a dry drunk. He never got effective treatment for his substance abuse, and so he remained a "drunk" despite the fact that he wasn't currently drinking. And yeah, addiction is a disease, just like cancer is. The fact that YOU don't understand that simply shows us how uninformed you are about what addiction is and how educated medical professionals deal with it nowadays.

I SURE HOPE AN EXPERT/THERAPIST WHO CAN REACH CHARLIE - AND- HIS FAMILY SEE THIS POST. IMHO, the problem is that Charlie has 'Narcissism' disorder ... NPD. He's a Narcissist and no one seems to be treating that. It's a horrid disorder to live with as NPD's cause immense emotional pain to the people closest to them and they will often instill fear in them. It's a very serious emotional disorder (no cure - just treatment) and I'm sure that's what he has.Therapists/DRS should go from there. They aren't treating the disorder -- they are overlooking it. I think he needs our prayers, not an emotional beating. Yes ... he has hurt many people and I do feel extremely sad for his little children. He has caused others to lose money, especially the entire cast & crew of his (very funny) show. But, look what he DID give us. Tens of millions of people watched his hit-sitcom show for yrs -- and for yrs we laughed and we laughed ... as well as his entertaining movies. He's made millions of people laugh ... that's a real good thing. Plus, we really don't know all of the circumstances or the history as to what lead up to this. He could maybe have MP/Mercury Poisoning. Although not likely, it sure is a possibility, and this is especially true if he's had recent (past year) dental work. Mercury has no where to go but up, up, up -- until it reaches the brain. He's acting like he has MP as he has all of the same signs of someone I knew with Mercury poisoning (his was from dental work -- root canals as well) If so, he needs to detox the Mercury before he can detox anything else, such as street drugs & booze and get the mercury removal from his teeth/mouth. He needs prayers, not judgment.
