NBC executives who had stood by their expensive musical drama Smash despite plunging ratings last season and who insisted that it only needed some tweaking to make it a success were taking it on the chin from TV columnists Wednesday after the show's two-hour season premiere tanked in the ratings. Smash Ratings Smushed! headlined Entertainment Weekly on its website. The Hollywood Reporter called the ratings for the Steven Spielberg-produced extravaganza catastrophic. Commented Yvonne Villarreal in the Los Angeles Times: It looks like the biggest bombshell to come out of NBC's Smash is its ratings hit. And Gary Levin in USA Today noted that while NBC had started out the season in the ratings lead among the key 18-49 age group, it has now gone from first back to worst again. And, writing in The New York Times, media writer Bill Carter said that after the ratings results, the show might more appropriately be called, Smithereens. That would best describe what the ratings for Tuesday's episode are likely to have done to the show's future: blown it to bits.
