The third movie in the 'Men in Black' sci-fi franchise was too strong for 'The Avengers' at the box-office this past weekend, finally relegating the Marvel comics blockbuster into second position. Though Joss Whedon's flick took a respectable $37 million, Will Smith and company notched up $55 million to take the top spot, reports Reuters.

It was a huge weekend for 'Men in Black 3', which topped the box offices in 104 countries, and is expected to pull in $202 million globally for the four-day holiday weekend. It's the first 'Men in Black' movie to hit theaters in 10 years, though interest in the alien action comedy doesn't appear to have waned. The franchise has been updated somewhat, with Josh Brolin playing the role of a young Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones). It's the end of a hugely successful spell for 'The Avengers', which became the fastest film to cross the $500 million barrier (23 days), shattering the previous record of 32 days by Avatar. In third place this week was action movie 'Battleship', which pulled in $10.7 million, and the Sacha Baron Cohen spoof 'The DICtator', with $9.6 million. Full figures for the long Memorial Day weekend will be released later on Monday (May 28, 2012).

'Men in Black 3' is likely to come under immediate pressure during its first week at No.1, with 'Snow White and the Huntsman', starring Kristen Stewart, set for release on Friday (June 1, 2012).
