The alleged father of Madonna's newly adopted daughter MERCY JAMES has given up his battle to keep the child in her birth country of Malawi.
The pop superstar won her appeal to take home the four-year-old on Friday (12Jun09) after her initial bid to adopt Mercy in April (09) was rejected.
When the singer submitted her request for interim adoption, a man alleging to be the tot's biological father, James Kambewa, launched a legal bid in the hope of getting his daughter back - while branding the Material Girl "scandalous" and unfit to bring up the child.
Now, Kambewa has halted his fight to keep the child in her homeland - and has wished Madonna all the best as she embarks on becoming a parent again.
He says, "Truly, I wish her well, but I only ask Madonna to look after my daughter properly. She must grow knowing that her father still lives in Malawi."
Kambewa, who has never seen the child apart from in newspaper pictures, was branded an "opportunist" by Mercy's relatives who claimed he had left her to be brought up in an orphanage after her mother died following the birth.
