DAME Helen Mirren has criticised Hollywood bosses for making too many movies aimed at men, insisting filmmakers continue to "worship at the altar of the 18 to 25-year-old male and his penis".
The British actress made the claim during a speech at the Hollywood Reporter's annual Power 100 Women In Entertainment Breakfast in Los Angeles on Tuesday (07Dec10) as she picked up a career achievement award.
Mirren praised the talented women working in the movie industry today, but admitted her fears that Hollywood still focuses on filling the screen with sexy women for the enjoyment of young male cinema-goers.
She said, "I resent in my life the survival of some very mediocre male actors and the professional demise of some very brilliant female ones. However, with all due respect to you many brilliant and successful women in this room... really not too much has changed in the canon of Hollywood filmmaking that continues to worship at the altar of the 18 to 25-year-old male and his penis... Quite small, I always think."
In a subsequent interview with the publication, she explained that being attractive should not be the most important quality for actresses, adding, "(It makes me feel) a bit cross, actually. We have to let go of this c**p. It creates even more pressure on women, and I certainly don't want to be a part of that. I'm not beautiful; I clean up nice... (but) the fact that I look good at the age I am is bloody irrelevant."
Halle Berry, who presented Mirren with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award in recognition of her personal and professional integrity, used her time on stage to praise the veteran actress for paving the way for older female stars to remain in work.
She adds, "The thing I want to say is that the last bastion of civil rights in the movie business is ageism. And Helen you have single-handedly, all by yourself, broken down that barrier because you can age, you can do films that are successful and you can still be hot as hell."

She's right. That’s why so many movies stink - talentless male actors staring in boring movies geared towards simple headed men. Thank God for men though; It's so easy to manipulate them into doing whatever you want!

I think there's a larger issue than sexism. What Ms.Mirren mentioned also includes horrible writing. The quality of the actor or actress is irrelevant if the content isn't there. As for movies being geared toward men 18-25, I don't see that. I see a boat load of action movies geared towards everybody, sci fi also geared towards everybody, and coming of age movies geared towards teenage girls.Just about all of them have subpar acting, writing, and directing. I don't even go to the movies anymore because it's twice the price for the half the product.I'll start going to the movies again when they stop insulting my intelligence, worry about offending, and tell a good, well thought out, story.

Another old windbag trying to further decrease the ever-diminishing roles that men have in this world. She should just go to sleep... forever!

Good for you Helen. Tell it like it is! I always get annoyed when hollywood movies throw in sex just for the sake of sex and it really has nothing to do with the movie. Example Megan Fox in Transformers. It almost never does anything for the movie except degrades it and degrades women. More Hollywood women should stop this sexism which is just for the producers , camera men and owners of the movie sets. Thanks Helen get the rest of low standards Hollywood women to be strong like you!

This is priceless.Did Dame Helen really realize only just now that the movie industry is driven by the desire to make money and not the desire to make art? What was this woman thinking when she was taking off her clothing in her movies? Did she really not realize that the whole point of her nude scenes was to increase box-office revenue by appealing to 18-to-25-year-old men?

The word is "presence". If one cannot spell when one makes such a facetious comment, one should not post it.
