Modern Family Now Reigns As Tv's Top Show
Driven by viewers who watch programs that they record on DVRs, ABC's Modern Family has become the top-rated show on television among adults 18-49, according to The New York Times. The newspaper observed that while 7.1 million viewers in that demo watch the show live, some 3.1 million watch it within seven days of the original telecast, bringing its total audience in the demo to 10.2 million. Nevertheless, it noted, the "time shifters" are not included in Nielsen's all-important overnight ratings, which are dominated by two shows that do not lend themselves to DVR viewing -- Fox's American Idol and NBC's The Voice -- in the 18-49 age group. However, the Times observed, when the TV season ends, Nielsen will issue season rankings that will include DVR playback, and at that time Modern Family is expected to dethrone Idol as the top-rated show among younger viewers, while CBS's NCIS is expected to take over the top spot among total viewers.
