Film critics agree that Paul Blart Mall Cop, featuring Kevin James ( The King of Queens ) in his first starring role in a movie, is not likely to offend anyone. But they disagree on the effect of that result. "Perfectly inoffensive and almost entirely unfunny," is the way Elizabeth Weitzman describes it in the New York Daily News. Glenn Whipp in the Los Angeles Daily News writes that the movie is "as sticky and gooey as a Cinnabon cinnamon roll," then notes that "the targeted 'tween audience will lap up James' antics, but for the rest of us, Blart is just empty calories." . On the other hand, Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times writes that he was amazed to realize that the movie "isn't 'wholesome' as a code name for 'boring.' It's as slam-bang preposterous as any R-rated comedy you can name. It's just that Paul Blart and the film's other characters don't feel the need to use the f-word as the building block of every sentence." And alluding to the fact that film studios release most of their dregs in January, when ticket sales are generally light, Peter Howell in the Toronto Star writes, "It's surprisingly okay, in a January kind of way."
