Carey Mulligan is the latest Hollywood star to blast the British government for its arts funding cutback - insisting low-budget films are doomed.
Britain's Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced earlier this year (10) that the UK Film Council, which has funded movies including Bright Star, In The Loop and Nowhere Boy, will be wound down as part of a range of cost-cutting measures.
Oscar-nominated actress Mulligan is convinced the controversial move will sound the death knell for independent, small budget pictures such as her new film Never Let Me Go.
She says, "It's a shame that the films are getting bigger and the smaller ones are going away. Films like Never Let Me Go are so hard to get made because of the subject matter and because it's a literary adaptation. It's a shame, and it makes you worry that new, original stories aren't going to get made any more."
