A stage adaptation of the 2004 Green Day album American Idiot will premiere this autumn in California, it has been announced.

Tony award-winning director Michael Mayer will helm the musical version of the acclaimed album, set to open at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September, the New York Times reports.

Green Day - Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt - are credited with the show's music and have collaborated with Mayer on the stage version as they prepare for the release of their new album 21st Century Breakdown.

"It doesn't make a lot of sense," lead singer Armstrong admitted, "but that's what I love about it.

"When people see it, it's going to be my wildest dream."

American Idiot has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and won Grammys for rock album and record of the year, with critics stunned by its ambition and post-9/11 themes.

Armstrong said the concept album's story is "not the most linear… in the world" but it can be said to follow disaffected young American Jesus of Suburbia as he struggles with his drug dealing Alter Ego St Jimmy and falls in love with anarchist Whatsername.

Hits from the album include the title track, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends.

Mayer told the New York Times there were not currently any plans for a Broadway run for the American Idiot musical but said the show was likely to continue after its one-month run in Berkeley.

Green Day announced last week their new album 21st Century Breakdown will be released on May 15th.

Like its predecessor, 21st Century Breakdown comes with a narrative structure and tells the story of "a young couple, Christian and Gloria, through the mess and promise of the century so far".
