New sitcom 'Animal Practice' has been cancelled after just one season.

The struggling NBC series has been axed after failing to pull in the viewers, with ratings falling to just 3.8 million for its latest episode.

Justin Kirk and Joanna Garcia starred in the comedy about a New York animal surgery. Although fans had predicted the cancellation of the low-rated show, many have bemoaned the loss of Crystal the monkey, who provided comic relief and had previously starred in 'The Hangover 2'.

However, animal rights organisation PETA has openly celebrated the demise of the sitcom, posting a victorious message on their website.

PETA wrote: ''Animal advocates, it's time to break out the bubbly. After pressure from PETA and tens of thousands of our members and supporters, NBC has pulled the plug on its cruel show, 'Animal Practice'...

''The only thing funny about this ''sitcom'' was its laughable ratings. By not tuning in, viewers told NBC that they weren't interested in watching animals dressed up and made to perform cheap tricks.''

'Whitney' will fill the 8pm Wednesday time slot starting from November 14, despite originally being scheduled for a regular Friday slot.

NBC announced last week it was keeping the show in its ''back pocket [in case] we need to make any schedule changes''.

The last ever episode of 'Animal Practice' will be broadcast on November 7.
