Star-studded romantic comedy New Year's Eve has crawled to the top of the U.S. box office chart in the slowest weekend of ticket sales in three years.
The movie, starring Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, grossed a weak $13.7 million (£8.56 million) in its opening weekend (09-11Dec11) - a stark contrast to director Garry Marshall's last hit, 2010's Valentine's Day, which also featured an ensemble cast and debuted with a healthy $56.3 million (£35 million).
Jonah Hill's new funny film The Sitter opened in second with a lacklustre $10 million (£6.25 million).
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 is at three with $7.9 million (£4.9 million) in its fourth week on release, while The Muppets and Arthur Christmas round out the new top five.
Box office ticket sales amounted to a total of $76 million (£47.5 million) this weekend - making it the worst for business this year (11) and the lowest since September 2008.
