Nirvana are on course to land the coveted Christmas number one spot on the U.K. pop charts with the re-release of their Smells Like Teen Spirit anthem.
As has become traditional in Britain, Facebook.com campaigns have led to classic rock alternative tunes getting a December release in an effort to stop novelty tracks and festive tunes performed by reality TV show stars reaching the top spot in the week leading up to Christmas Day (25Dec).
And this year's 'spoiler' choice is Nirvana's hit, which is currently a second favourite behind the debut from Britain's The X Factor star Amelia Lily, according to bookmakers at Ladbrokes.
Also in the running for the coveted U.K. Christmas number one: the cast of reality show The Only Way Is Essex with their cover of Wham!'s Last Christmas, Justin Bieber and Amy Winehouse.
The spoiler Christmas number one tradition began in 2009 when a Facebook campaign helped propel Rage Against The MAChine's Killing In The Name to the top of the charts ahead of X Factor winner Joe MCElderry's Miley Cyrus cover, The Climb.
