Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher received a cheeky gift for his 40th birthday in the shape of a monkey.

Rock's elder statesman received a number of outlandish gifts for his birthday, marking another milestone for the guitarist who was recently given a Brit award along with his band for their contribution to British music.

According to the Sun, Gallagher received a certificate from a zoo confirming he is now the proud sponsor of Jimmy the monkey at his birthday celebrations in London.

Gallagher can count a host of superstars as personal friends, including comedian Russell Brand, Italian footballer Alessandro Del Piero and fellow rockers Paul Weller and Serge Pizzorno.

Younger brother Liam Gallagher has a way to go before reaching 40, but both Oasis talismen can now look back on an era of British music dominated by themselves and other Britpop bands.

Blur frontman and the Good, the Bad, the Queen singer Damon Albarn will turn 40 next year, while Pulp's Jarvis Cocker hit the landmark in 2003.
